Our Angle

I found this a satisfying read. Hawthorne's writing is wonderfully skillful. There is much food for thought, contrasting the desire for communal life that resides in many of us, with the realities of human nature. Working on the land together does not prove satisfying and enjoyable to all nor economically profitable. Personal interests still prevail. There are sometimes large discrepancies between what community members espouse and what they actually believe, experience, and/or practice.

That said, I would add that The Blithesdale Romance is written with subtlety and delves into issues that I feel would be best understood, and enjoyed, by those with the life experience and knowledge of human nature that come with adulthood, or, perhaps, by high school level youth, with parental interaction.
