God's Smuggler

Summary

Author
: Brother Andrew

Summary: Like The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom, God's Smuggler is an autobiography that begins as the story of a Dutch family enduring German occupation in World War II. But this is only the start. After a time of disinterest in God, young Andrew becomes a believer and pioneers a remarkable career delivering banned Bibles to Communist Europe. His work then grows to include others in delivering aid to persecuted Christians in post-WWII Eastern Europe.

Like The Hiding Place, God's Smuggler is for many in the Christian faith a classic 20th century autobiography, having sold 12 million copies in over 40 languages.

Andrew's experiences shed light on the paranoia of Communist governments and showcase the faith of persecuted people. This book offers history, drama, adventure and lived-out faith. Our family is among those who were inspired by this book to the point of joining in with the ministry to East Europeans under Communist control.

After publishing God's Smuggler, "Brother Andrew," as he is called, embarked on a second secretive career serving the suffering church in other regions.

I had the privilege of working on a project with Brother Andrew (and others) in Albania. I am not alone in esteeming him as a "hero of the faith." And I highly recommend this book to teens and/or as read by adults to younger children.

Year by year, our society loses memory of the 20th century tyranny that Communism visited on the nations of Eastern Europe. In my opinion, young Westerners will do well to recognize what happens in a society where God is deliberately replaced, as He was in Eastern Europe, or carelessly displaced, as in places now closer to home. God's Smuggler not only provides just such a reminder, but also offers hope for "the cure."
