Gathering Blue

Summary

   Author: Lois Lowry

Summary : Gathering Blue is a companion novel to The Giver, though the stories are not obviously and directly related, their relationship not being revealed until the third book in the trilogy.  This is the story of a society where "disorder, savagery, and self-interest" rule and of Kira, a crippled weaver, suddenly orphaned, who is taken from her poor and squalid village to palatial quarters at the Council Edifice.  There she is expected to use her gifts as a weaver to work on a special robe used in an annual ceremony to recall the history of her country. Along the way, she discovers that all is not as it appears nor as she has believed it to be, and she discovers truths that will change her life and world.

Our Angle Our Angle

Lois Lowry is an amazingly creative writer. There are issues too intense, in my opinion, for the youngest in the book's suggested age range of 10 and up. But for older readers, Gathering Blue, like The Giver, is rich and thought provoking, with wonderful contrasts between lives lived self-centeredly and in community. The value of creativity and the idea of challenging the beliefs that society teaches will be pondered long after the book is finished.

I would guess that different readers will read different meanings into some aspects of the story, as fit their worldview, making this an especially interesting book to discuss as a family, Gathering Blue is a highly original work, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Recommended.

End Slavery

The best way to show your appreciation for this free service:

Free the slaves

For many years, our focus was on helping families train their own children. Our heart is still there, but this season of life has us focused on something old, yet new – slavery. More people are held as unwilling slaves today (27 million) than at any time in history, including over 200,000 in the U.S., mostly women and children.

If you appreciate the service BookAngles has provided over the years to you and others, then we invite you to show that appreciation with a donation to our work with International Teams.
