I have a love-hate relationship with Daddy Long Legs. It is well-written and witty, making for an easy, enjoyable read. I appreciate much that the author obviously values, such as true education and a thinking woman. However the shades of humanism, the value placed on being an "independent" woman, the glorification of some unbiblical philosophy and the lack of godliness in the main characters would make me loathe to hand this to someone very young and/or not quite secure in their beliefs. Granted, this was written in 1912, and the problem areas are mild by today's standards, but I do not wish our children to be like the frog in the boiling water, becoming comfortable, in small degrees, with false values or beliefs.
